CANON
History: Briar grew up known as Roach, on the streets of Hajra from the ages of four to ten. His gang and the Thief-Lord that led them kept him mostly safe and fed, and he developed or discovered quite a talent for pickpocketing and theft. But then, just when Briar was about to be sent to prison or hard labor for getting caught two too many times, the mage Niklaren Goldeye scooped him up and took him to Winding Circle Temple, in Emelan. There Briar discovered he possessed plant magic and was taken under the wing of Dedicate Rosethorn, whose sharp tongue was only balanced by her gentleness with plants, and her partner Dedicate Lark, a sweet and kind thread-mage. He also met three girls – Sandry, Daja, and Tris – and through a series of magical misadventures they became intertwined closer than blood, both in friendship and through magical bonds. Once Briar and the girls gained enough control over their power to be recognized as adult mages – at the unheard of age of fourteen, due to the strength of their powers – they and their teachers set out to travel and continue learning outside the temple walls. One of the first places Briar and Rosethorn went was the stone city of Chammur, where they found Evvy, a young stone-mage, who became Briar’s student. When Briar, Evvy, and Rosethorn got to the empire of Yanjing, they got swept up in a war. In the small nation of Gyongxe, they witnessed massacres and more, became prisoners of war, and had to commit their own war crimes to escape. After their escape, Briar was reunited with his foster-sisters, going on another adventure with them in the empire of Namorn, where they all got to know each other as changed adults rather than the children they had been.
Personality: Briar grew up as a street rat, and though he’s grown up considerably, it still comes across when he lets his guard down. He’s incredibly clever and good at reading people’s intentions. He’s fiercely loyal to those he loves and will leap to their defense – especially since he’s surrounded by women (though he learned quite quickly that they’re not exactly delicate flowers). As an adolescent, Briar moved on from pickpocketing to heart-stealing, and is quite a flirt. He’s a playful trickster at times, but doesn’t take nonsense from anyone when he really wants something. He’s generally mistrustful of nobility and the wealthy, and feels more at home with street people, peasants, and commoners – though he’s learned to deal with authority out of necessity. He’s easygoing and prefers leisure to work, though he does love to learn and to help people. People and plants are the most important things to Briar – well, and maybe food. He loves Rosethorn more than life itself. Lark, Niko, Evvy, his foster-sisters, and his shakkan are all important figures in his life, but Rosethorn is the sun in his sky. Rosethorn hasn’t managed to entirely get the streetspeak out of his lexicon, though it gets better or worse depending on his emotional state and who he’s interacting with.
The war in Gyongxe has left Briar with a serious case of post-traumatic stress, and he often hallucinates images, sounds, and scents from the carnage. They can be triggered by images of chaos, the sound of bells, or just by the wrong wandering thoughts. His dreams are plagued with them, though he sleeps better when he is not alone. He stubbornly refuses to admit that they are more than just dreams, though his sisters have begun to convince him that scars of the soul are as damaging as scars of the flesh.
INTO THE HEDGE
Seeming: Possession
Role: Vegetable garden
Abilities: Plant magic, far weaker than his abilities in canon. Generally manifests as a general green thumb – plants under his care tend to thrive. Specific abilities include speeding up the growth of plants (at the expense of strength – fast growth is weak growth) and a magical “communication” with them, which is wordless, mostly transference of feelings and concepts.
Description: Tallish, with black hair and green eyes. His skin, previously golden brown, is now a darker brown nearer to soil. His black, short-cropped hair also sprouts small flowers and leaves. Flowers and grass grow where he walks (unless it’s stone or metal), and he sheds dirt like most humans shed skin cells. His hands and forearms are covered with vines attached to the skin like raised tattoos, which react involuntarily to his emotions.
His physical form is a small plot of earth, used to grow flowers and plants. The fruit and flowers of these plants are really, really good, and in general anything planted there thrives.
Reasoning: In canon, one of the strongest plant mages ever. He’s an ambient mage, meaning he draws his power from the thing itself, rather than placing spells using his own power. So basically he’s been magically connected to plants since birth!
